Chapter Thirteen

Liam locked the doors and slammed down the gas pedal. Tires squealing, the van shot toward the dock-area exit. When he slowed to turn onto a road, a woman grabbed the driver’s door handle and held on. Her muffled scream penetrated. “Help! Let me come with you!”

A running man bumped into her and tore her away from the van. As Liam drove on, shifting lanes to dodge people, he looked at me in his rearview mirror. “I don’t think the bullet hit the bone. More than just a flesh wound, though. It likely tore some muscle tissue. You’ll definitely need stitches.”

I settled in a cross-legged position with my back to the van’s front bench. The guard lay face up, his feet in front of my knees and his head near the rear door. Saigon sat at his left and Shanghai at his right. “I guess I could go to Dr. Rubenstein,” I said, “but could I get there without bounty hunters chasing me?”

Liam shook his head. “I think not. Even the doctor might turn you in.”

Saigon touched my knee. “I can stitch you up.”

I gave her a skeptical look. “With your sewing kit?”

“Don’t worry. I’ve done quite a bit of Reaper-skin mending in my time, including my own leg once and my arm twice. I’m not a bad stitcher, if I do say so myself.”

I nodded. “Sure. Thanks.”

“I have a first-aid kit under the seat,” Liam said. “No pain-killers in it, of course, but you can use whatever’s there. Got some bandages, I think. Maybe some alcohol.”

“That’ll help.” I looked under the bench, found a white metal box, and slid it next to my hip. “Just get us out of downtown. Once you’re clear, let me know. Then we’ll decide what to do next.”

“I will.”

I nodded at the guard. “How is he?”

“Dead,” Saigon said. “I didn’t mean to kill him. The elbow slam crushed his throat. Maybe broke his neck. I guess I got carried away.”

I sighed. Another senseless death. Although I thoroughly warned him, guilt still weighed me down. “Do you mind reaping him?”

“No problem. If your bullet hole can wait.”

I glanced at the wound. Blood still oozed but not too badly. The throbbing, however, sent pulses of pain to my fingers and shoulder. “I think it’s okay.”

“All right. I’ll just —”

“Let’s do it together,” Shanghai said. “I need to teach Phoenix how to collect a ghost without valve energy. You pull him out, and while you’re stitching, I’ll put him in my cloak.”

Saigon blinked at her. “You can do that?”

“I think so. At least I did it when I practiced with a ghost named Crandyke. Tokyo taught me.”

“All right. Let’s give it a try.” Saigon pulled her sleeve over her hand and covered the guard’s eyes. Seconds later, the sleeve flattened. She whispered, “Take it easy. You can trust me. … What’s your name? … Okay, Knox, just relax and let go. … I know. The darkness is scary, but I’ll take care of you. … Yes, I’m a Reaper.
